"A film for those who believe in dreams" (Shirley Clarke). 20 years in the making, film footage from two decades of performances, stills, abstract and surrealist video-imagery are combined with interviews with Coleman, his friends and admirers, as well as the sights and sounds of New York and Coleman´s native Fort Worth.

This documentary about the late jazz great Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) uses footage taken from 14 hours of European concert performances filmed in 1967 by Berlin-born filmmaker Christian Blackwood. It took director Charlotte Zwerin another twenty years to complete the film with additional material in its present form.

When it was released in 1971, Carla Bley´s monumental jazz opera with lyrics by poet Paul Haines was hailed as a masterpiece. Filmmaker Steve Gebhardt captured the live performances in 1970-71. The film, premiered in 1999, is an unprecedented opportunity to see how this complex recording was assembled.

Centered on historical ground in Berlin, the monument Marx-Engels-Forum was erected in the 80´s by the GDR and is a hotspot for tourists today. In his experimental documentary film director Jürgen Böttcher combines his footage from 1981-86 with new material presenting drummer and percussionist Günter ´Baby´ Sommer and saxophone-actor Dietmar Diesner. Like Böttcher both are former residents of the GDR.

"I combine prepared sources with live images, drawing, video and picture, with the possibility to mix them together. Old and new techniques are both fascinating to me.
Last winter we decided to start a duo, developing a live performance with our own images and sounds, looking for the essentials in between" (Petra Dolleman).

Fine Kwiatkowski (dance)
GOKAN has been founded by painter Helge Leiberg, guitarist Lothar Fiedler, saxophone-actor Dietmar Diesner and dancer Noriko Wada who invented the name meaning ´the senses´. Since 1995 dancer Fine Kwiatkowski is a steady member of the group.
Together they create an improvised art performance by mixing live painting with sounds and movement.

The film contains illusions of distances, durations, degrees, divisions of antipathies, polarities, likenesses, complements, desires. Acceleration of absence to presence. Simultaneous silence and sound, one and all" (Michael Snow).

MY NAME IS ALBERT AYLER

The film is a collage of archive material, rare concert recordings and interviews with Albert Ayler´s father, his brother Don Ayler and his closest collegues. Ayler´s own voice runs through the whole film. He was found dead in the East River, New York, 1970, just 34 years old. The film was made in his hometown Cleveland and in New York, Chicago, London, Stockholm and Arvidsjaur between 1988 and 2004.

20 years after its first release, RISING TONES CROSS has become a valuable historical document for some and a nostalgia piece for others - a cult film.

This rare film by video-pioneers Steina + Woody Vasulka, co-founders also of the legendary New Yorker performance-theatre ´The Kitchen´, is a document of Don Cherry performing by himself outside in New York City, on the roof of a building, playing his cornet to the buildings and the streets below, and on the street where his playing mixes with the sounds of traffic.

The piano genius talks about his musical concepts and the importance of improvisation.

CECIL TAYLOR: ALL THE NOTES

Christopher Felver managed to capture, in breezy fashion, key essences of one of the true giants of post-war music, a man whose playing Glenn Gould once described as ´the most formidable pianism my ears have heard: This is the great divine of American piano playing´.
