STRAWALDE / GÜNTER `BABY` SOMMER (Germany)
Strawalde (aka Jürgen Böttcher) live action painting
Günter ´Baby´ Sommer dr, perc
This year´s TOTAL MUSIC MEETING opens at the Berlinische Galerie with Strawalde
painting and Günter Sommer playing.
Strawalde, as he calls himself, is a painter, as well as a renowned
documentary and fiction filmdirector and a landmark-name: Jürgen Böttcher.
In the former GDR his works of art were often labelled as ´gangster painting´.
Ultimately, with the fall of the wall, he received his due recognition. Today
the 76-year old artist is widely recognized as one of the most influential
and innovative painters in contemporary art.
I maintain, that whenever I succeeded in creating a true painting, it
contains the essence of a thousand things I have seen, smelled, tasted and
dreamt. Like an insect spinning its thread out of its own body, the sounds
and signs of the sum of things lived and experienced can be traced back in
a painting being an incorporation of life."
Jürgen Böttcher, born in Frankenberg, Saxonia. Raised in Strahwalde,
a village in the region of Oberlausitz, which inspired him to take his artists
name.
He studied painting from 1949 to 1953 with Wilhelm Lachnit at the Akademie der
Bildenden Künste in Dresden and in 1955 began film studies at Deutsche Hochschule
für Filmkunst in Potsdam-Babelsberg.
Jürgen Böttcher is one of the most renowned DEFA-film directors. Some of his
numerous documentary films were banned by GDR-officials. An early fiction film
which would have had the potential of becoming a ´GDR Nouvelle vague film´ was
also forbidden and remained a fragment.
Paintings in public collections: Nationalgalerie Berlin, Sammlung Deutscher
Bundestag, Albertinum Dresden, Dresdner Residenzschloss, Albertina Wien,
Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Museum Ludwig, The Boston Public Library.
Film retrospectives were held in 1986 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, 1988;
at the 42nd Edinburgh International Film Festival, 1989; at the Deutsches
Filmmuseum Frankfurt/Main; 1990 at the Internationales Forum des Jungen Films
Berlin; 1993 at Jeu de Paume, Paris and at the MoMa in New York City.
Günter ´Baby´ Sommer is one of the pioneers of contemporary European
jazz. He has developed a unique vocabulary which has won him international
recognition.
Sommer, the ´drumming story-teller´, frequently collaborates also with authors
such as Christa Wolf, Christoph Hein and Günter Grass.
Since the 80´s he has also collaborated with dancers, actors, film directors
and playrights. He started his collaboration with Strawalde a couple of years ago.
In November 2005 Günter ´Baby´ Sommer played in a trio with bassist Barre
Phillips and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith at the TOTAL MUSIC MEETING - a musical
re-union with the latter after 23 years which was earned standing ovations.

MOHAMMAD REZA MORTAZAVI/ ALI REZA MORTAZAVI (Iran)
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi tombak, daf
Ali Reza Mortazavi santur
A rare duo-performance by Mohammad Reza Mortazavi and Reza Ali Mortazavi,
both master musicians despite their young age, who have created new styles and
developed extended techniques for their classical instruments. They aim to apply
these techniques in order to communicate new spiritual contents and musical
sensations. Their virtuosity and improvisational skills, based on a profound
understanding of the musical tradition of their country, are startling and the
music they create is of exceptional beauty.
Both also work as soloists as well as in various international formations.
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi gave his TMM debut as soloist in 2005. The concert with
his elder brother Ali Reza Mortazavi is an opportunity you should not miss as
they have rarely performed as a duo.
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi born 1978 in Isfahan (Iran). His parents, both
musicians, gave him a musical education on the tombak starting at the age of 6.
In 1988, at the age of ten, he won a music competition in Teheran. A feat he
repeated in over the next six years. He started teaching when he was 12,
performed widely and formed a percussion orchestra. He was invited to Germany
in 2000 and gave his debut concert in Munich. He has put out several CDs and
now lives in Germany (Berlin and Munich). In 2003 he won the young talent award
at the international Ruth-Festival in Rudolfstadt. In spring 2007, after his
return from Iran, he concerted in Aachen and Cologne together with his elder
brother Ali Reza. He recently appeared in Berlin as soloist and with Indian
master musicians.

ARIEL SHIBOLET (Israel)
Ariel Shibolet sopranosax
This is the TMM-debut concert of Ariel Shibolet, a key member of the
Israeli free jazz and improvising scene and one of the most interesting
reed-players of the younger generation worldwide.
Inspired by Evan Parker, Steve Lacy and Anthony Braxton, he has developed his
own sound vocabulary "which is the work of a poet" (Joel Pagier, Improjazz 116).
Ariel Shibolet, born 1972 in Ramat Gan, Israel, lives in Tel-Aviv.
He received a classical music education, learnt the cello and later switched to
soprano saxophone. He has collaborated with almost all improvising musicians in
Israel and has toured the US and Germany in 2004 and 2005, where he performed
with musicians like Damon Smith, Scott R. Looney, Nory Jacoby, Jerome Bryerton,
Aurora Josephson, Jen Baker, Wolfgang Fuchs, Birgit Uhler and Klaus Janek. His
music has been released in Israel, the USA and England. He is a founder of the
first Israeli Improvisers Orchestra and is a curator and producer of many musical
events in Israel. He might be best known abroad for his recording ´Metal Tube &
Consciousness´ (Leo Records). Shibolet, who testified in a recent interview that
his favorite contemporary musicians are pianist Cecil Taylor, reed player Evan
Parker, and the late bassist Peter Kowald, all of whom made some groundbreaking
solo works, is preoccupied with the small changes in sound and music and the
listening experience. "When a player creates a smaller change than the listener
can notice consciously and then continues to add identical changes, at what point
in time will the listener start to notice these changes consciously?" he asks in
his liner notes, and answers, "Interesting things can happen during that special
period of time when the changes are not being consciously noticed, but only
experienced." (Eyal Hareuveni, Allaboutjazz)
He also trained as a Feldenkrais-teacher and has won critical acclaim in the
field of music therapy using his methods he developed himself. A children's book,
inspired by his music, has recently been published in Israel. It describes the
experiences of a turtle listening to music ranging from a solo performances up
to a complex orchestra !

TIPPETTS / TIPPETT / KELLERS (GB / Germany)
Julie Tippetts voice
Keith Tippett piano
Willi Kellers drums, percussion
After 14 years for the first time again performing in trio at TMM.
Julie Tippetts
Born on June 6, 1947 in London, gave up her career in the pop- and jazz-rock
industry in the 1970´s to become one of the foremost European vocalists in the
field of contemporary jazz and improvised music - working with some of the world´s
leading improvising musicians.
Julie´s extended use of the voice as an instrument has led her to develop a
vocal technique beyond boundaries of a conventional singer. During the 1970´s
she explored the range of vocal possibilities in groups such as the Spontaneous
Music Ensemble, Centipede, Ovary Lodge, Voice (with Maggie Nicols and Phil Minton)
and The Ark. In the 1980s she worked in a myriad of duos, trios and small
ensembles. Much of this has been documented on vinyl and CD. The 1990s brought
the opportunity once more to work in several large ensembles including Mujician,
The Georgian Ensemble, The Dedication Orchestra (in memory of the exiled South
African musicians of the Blue Notes) and Keith Tippett´s Tapestry). In more
recent years, Julie has undertaken a number of "arts in education" projects
and workshops (both with school children and adults) including classes for voice
improvisation at the Dartington International Summer School, the Welsh College
of Music and Drama, and the ´Crossings´ educational trip to Cape Town, South
Africa in 1998, employing her natural ability to communicate and encourage
others.
Her numerous recordings, which feature many of her own compositions as well
as extensive improvisations, demonstrate her consummate musicianship.
Regarding her collaboration with Keith Julie once said: "We never rehearse
together or talk about what we´re going to do. You´re living on your nerve
ends. It's like being in a dream and yet awake at the same time because you
have to respond as well as to instigate and your whole body is tuned to going
for the magic."
Keith Tippett
Born August 25, 1947 in Bristol. Since the late 1960´s the pianist, composer,
arranger, performer and educator has had an unparalleled career, ranging
from jazz-rock to spontaneous composition. He is regarded as one of the most
uncompromising and influential pioneers in jazz, jazz-rock and improvised music,
having contributed widely to their development.
Since 1964 collaboration with the ´Blue Notes´ (Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana,
Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani, Louis Moholo) as well as Elton Dean, Mark Charig,

groupings in the 1960´s and 1970´s. Formed many other bands, among them the
legendary ´Centipede´ assembling 50 musicians from the spheres of Jazz, Rock,
Folk as well as classically trained musicians; ´Ovary Lodge´, ´Ark´, ´Mujician´
(in various line-ups), ´Dedication Orchestra´, ´Tapestry´, etc.

Rogers, Tony Levin, Howard Riley, Hatty Miller, Peter Fairclough, Peter
Brötzmann, Willi Kellers, Hans Reichel, Zim Ngqawana and his group ´Ingomaand´
and with vocalist Julie Tippetts. He has also often performed as soloist.

Harold Rubin, born 1932 in Johannesburg. He is a classically trained
clarinetist and studied art and architecture at Witwatersrand University in
Johannesburg and the A.A. in London. In South Africa, he founded a jazz quartet
with both black and white musicians. In 1961 he published ´Sharpeville´ - a
series of drawings which were a reaction to the massacre of the previous year.
Later, he participated in a competition themed on religious art, but remarkably,

acquitted after a trial that lasted five weeks. In 1963 he emigrated to Israel
where he has been living since.
From 1967 to 1980 he gave up music and worked solely as a painter, architect and
art teacher. In 1984 Rubin began working with the composer Yosi Mar-Haim and the
group ´Season´s End´. Two years later he gave up architecture to devote himself
to music and painting. He founded the group called ´Zaviot´ with Mark Smulian and
won a prize at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in 1987. Five years later he played in
the group ´Trialog´ (with Kobi Shefi and Assaf Sirkis) whose appearances have
included one with Paul Bley in 1993.
Rubin has been organizing and curating concert series and festivals in Israel
for over ten years. He works with young Israeli composers, improvising dancers,
playwrights and film makers. He is a co-founder of 'Hagada Hasmalit'
(The West Bank), "a melting pot for many creative musicians and composers who
perform in different formations".
In 1996 he founded the sextet ´Blue Bag´ that improvises on his poems. He has
written music for plays by Miriam Kainy and appears regularly with his own group

the bandstand before!" The band is using a book made up, in large part, of the
material played by the Dedication Orchestra that was founded in 1992 in London
in honour of Blue Notes and Brotherhood of Breath. Evan Parker and Steve Beresford
transcribed the repertory of these bands and wrote new arrangements, as did Keith
Tippett, Mike Westbrook, Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler and many more. The changing
line-up of the Dedication Orchestra has also included Lol Coxhill, Radu Malfatti,
Elton Dean, Paul Rutherford, Paul Rogers, Phil Minton, Julie Tippetts, Maggie
Nicols.
Describing his new big band in an interview with Marc Medwin, he said "I am
hoping to breathe some new life into South African jazz". Medwin noted,
"Revitalization through repetition is nothing new for the veteran drummer."
Moholo appeared at the TMM 2004 in a duo with Irène Schweizer when they
celebrated both 40 years of playing together (which happened to be also the
10th anniversary of democracy in South Africa).
Foxes Fox is the name of a quartet formed in 1999 by
Parker/Moholo-Moholo/Beresford/Edwards. Their second CD, Naan Tso, was
recorded in October 2004 and published in 2005: "The great Moholo made
London his home in exile during the apartheid period. And our lives were the
richer for it. We made this record to mark his return home and to say goodbye.
Don´t forget us, Tebugo" (www.emanemdisc.com/psi.html).

CHARLOTTE HUG / LAWRENCE CASSERLEY (CH / GB)
Charlotte Hug viola, voicet
Lawrence Casserley computer processing
The TMM-debut performance of the Swiss viola player and performance artist
Charlotte Hug and the English live-electronics pioneer is long overdue.
Charlotte Hug, born 1965 in Zurich, Switzerland. She trained as a
classical musician as well as a visual artist. She studied viola and composition
in Berne and then with Paul Silverthoren at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
She also studied 'scenic design' at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Zurich and
at the Unversity of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin.
Hug has developed viola techniques such as slackening and/or wetting the bow
hairs which allows her to produce four to eight voices simultaneously. She has
received several prizes and grants (1999, First prize at Swiss sound artist
Association, 2000 residency in London and 2003 Kunstlabor Baden). She performs
together with other artists and often also as soloist at international festivals
in Europe, Canada and the U.S. She often appears in unusual settings with
surprising acoustic, visual and emotional qualities such as an underground ice
gallery of the Rhône glacier in the Swiss mountains, a sound-proof S&M torture
chamber in the red light district in Zurich or in underground corridors of a
former prison in Farringdon, London.
Hug is a member of the ´London Improvisers Orchestra´ and her regular
collaborators include Evan Parker, Barry Guy, Lawrence Casserley, John Butcher,
John Edwards, Roger Turner, Phil Minton, Irène Schweizer, Elliott Sharp, Fred
Lonberg-Holm, George Lewis, Otomo Yoshihide, Lisle Ellis, Phil Wachsmann,
Marcio Mattos, Barry Guy, Maya Homburger, Pat Thomas, Mark Wastell, Steve
Beresford, Thomas Lehn, Urs Leimgruber, Ute Wassermann, Alexander Frangenheim
and the dancer Fine Kwiatkowski.
She is also a member of the Swiss Centre for Computer music and has been a
guest lecturer at universities worldwide. She focuses on composition,
improvisation, electro-accoustic music, performance, film and theatre music
and works also in art, drawing, sound and concert installations. She rounds
this off with an extensive discography (www.charlottehug.ch).
Lawrence Casserley, born 1941 in Little Easton, Essex. He moved to
the U.S. with his family in 1952 where he studied at Columbia University, New York
(1959-60) and at the Chicago Musical College (composition, conducting, percussion,
flute) from 1960-66. Postgraduate studies (1966-1967) at the Royal College of
Music, London followed by studies of electronic music at the Royal College of
Music (RCM) with Tristam Cary. He began his teaching career at the RCM in London
where he became professor in charge of studios and adviser for electro-acoustic
music, for more than twenty-five years. Since 1995 he has been working as a
freelance musician. Casserley composed and performed his first electro-acoustic
works in 1969. In 1972, he founded the mixed-media group Hydra along with the
artist Eddie Franklin-White. The group combined electroacoustic and instrumental
sound with light, smoke, lasers, projections. For these performances Hydra
collaborated extensively with other musicians, visual artists, writers, poets
and technicians.
Along with flautist Simon Desorgher, Casserley founded London's Nettlefold
Festival in 1984. Since the early 1990's he has been working on designs of
digital signal processing systems for live performance. Casserley works
regularly with Evan Parker and his electroacoustic Ensemble and has also
collaborated with Barry Guy, Melvyn Poore, Alan Tomlinson, Hugh Davies,
Vanessa Mackness, Phil Wachsmann, Paul Lytton, Joel Ryan amongst others.
He also has an extensive discography (www.lcasserley.co.uk).
Lawrence Casserley and Charlotte Hug gave their debut performance as a duo in
May 2007.

CLOSING CONCERT from WORKSHOPS
WORKSHOP 1: David Moss
ImprovElation
(3-day workshop led by David Moss)
How does it feel to be on the edge of the known?
Can you trigger your impulses and abilities to fashion a moment of musical elation?
Does improvisation give you the tools to expand your music?
Is a solo REALLY a solo?
What does it mean to REALLY play with another person?
Is your virtuosity inhibiting or releasing you?
What does it feel like to put your "style" in the hands/ears of someone else?
Is improvising the beginning or end of the unknown world?
How powerful and present is your memory?
This 3-day workshop is built on situations of solo surprises, lucky
limitations and ensemble support systems.
The ImprovElation workshop is founded on the idea that to improvise means to
be joyously "beyond control"; it will try to answer (or, at least, ask!) most of
the above questions in the pursuit of those elusive moments of musical and
performance elation that we all crave.
Open to all musicians, singers, performers, at any level of experience.
Please bring your instrument, or anything necessary for you to improvise.
The workshop-venue is equipped with a baby grand piano and a drum-set.

internationally. In 1991 he received a Guggenheim grant; in 1992, a DAAD
Fellowship (Berlin). Moss is the co-founder and artistic director of the
Institute for Living Voice, where he regularly offers workshops and brainstorms
with other vocal artists. He recently premiered "David Lunaire" ("Pierrot Lunaire"
revisited) with Rome's Alter Ego ensemble.? Moss sings in Heiner Goebbels'
"Surrogate Cities" and "Prometheus" and with the Ensemble Modern in a Zappa
program, among others. He has sung with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir
Simon Rattle and at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra.
Moss was a featured soloist at the Salzburg Festival in Luciano Berio's
"Cronaca del Luogo" (1999), returning there in 2001 as Prince Orlovsky in a
controversial staging of "Die Fledermaus".
He has performed with many of the noted improvisers of the last 25 years in
festivals, groups and projects around the world (www.davidmossmusic.com).
